The upgrade I think is a flat rate thing that CX offers at the airport...before departure. They don't calculate that against what fare class ticket in economy that you are holding. They even upgrade free award ticket. I can't remember how much I paid for a one segment upgrade, LAX HKG April 2007. $1200 sounds right.
I think CX even allows $$upgrade from J to F.
