The database search takes time, if you are matching against a database of 1000 it is much quicker than matching against a database of 100 000 and the more users register the worse the performance will become until it completely grinds to a halt.
The image processing time is trivial compared to the time taken by the set-up and adjustment procedures. You should find that once the machine is satisfied it can record your iris image, the next stage - database matching - is only a few second.
Traveller stupidity doesn't help. Couple of weeks back we even had some chap trying to use the system although he wasn't registered......
