Yep -- when you see self-supported distance runners or hikers, they're always pulling wheeled luggage behind them.

For a non-overloaded carryon and a person without back problems or the like, baggage that converts into a (decent-quality) backpack is the best for carrying it, slowly or at speed, IMHO. Where wheeled bags are better is when you're frequently alternating between moving and stopped (e.g. standing in line.) They're also better at carrying unusually heavy and/or fragile things.
