A colleague of mine was with me at LHR the other day when we went through Zone R, He was starting his 4th JNB trip this year and using the same bag that he has always used. It is the same length as that TUMI. He was told to check it in by the jobsworth who asks you if you have any liquids in your bag.
I had exactly the same issue a couple of weeks ago going through Fast Track at T4. The woman told me to put in the BA size checker and it was marginally too long - due to the wheels. Was told to check it in.
I have used the same bag for 3 years - two long hauls a month and have never been stopped. At check in I tried to reason with the check-in agent and told him how often I had taken it on board - only to be told I was a liar and that I could never have taken it on board before! I'm afraid my temper got the better of me at 6.30 that morning...
