Just to clarify what Tom said, which is absolutely right, your departing flight actually has to leave from the UK for you to have to pay the taxes. If you depart from France, Germany, etc, then go through the UK on your way home, you don't pay the UK tax (though there actually is a tax associated with upgrades out of France).
A bit OT but the "taxes".. isn't that included in your ticket price when you book the ticket? And if not and you are leaving the country flat broke how would they make you pay?
