Cancellations happen, though the reasons given as to why may not always be on the up-and-up. But it happens on most all airlines. Numerous threads in this and other forums address this. It could be worse. At least NW apparently let you know the flight was cancelled. Try having a flight cancelled on you, and being left on your own to discover this.
