You're quite wrong about the direct and indirect airline jobs. The Detroit News has repeatedly cited a headcount of 8,000 people for NW in Michigan.
What was not mentioned are:
Sky caps,
Taxi Cab drivers that serve the airport,
Restaurant and shop employees,
Aircraft refulers.
Airport Fire and police employees.
TSA employees.
Customs and INS inspectors.
Airport management employees.
Maintenance staff for the airport.
Aircraft cleaners.
Air freight agents.


I could go on and on if you want but it is obvious that there are many more jobs associated with the airlines then just their own employees.
