I would stretch the process of finding my checkbook and scrawling out a check to about 20 minutes. (It can be done -- I've seen it.) Or mix forms of payment. That could take a long time too. ("I want to pay $10 of this fee on my credit card, give you $5 in cash and write a check for the rest.")
Let's make this as painful as possible for everyone involved.
