I'm kind of lurking here on the United site; I mostly fly USAir, which also has SWUs. And USAir used to be notoriously forgetful about collecting SWUs (although they seem to have tightened up considerably over the past couple of years). When this first happened to me, I decided to turn in the certificate anyway -- not necessarily out of integrity, but largely out of concern that in a subsequent mixup I could lose my Business Class status. When I told the gate agent that she needed to collect my certificate, she was VERY profusive in her thanks, telling me that she could have lost her job if my ticket had been audited. I've never felt that hanging onto my SWU was worth someone else's job, so I've been scrupulous about turning it in since.</font>
Since you moved us in this direction, I used to have the policy "don't give until asked", but I've given that up on US, and I actually find the agents to be much more friendly and helpful in general when I offer up my certificate first thing instead of waiting to be asked. My theory is that they all know what we're up to and are happy to see there will be no discussion of the issue ...

Anyway, to the UA 1K/SWU issue, on one hand there are threads complaining about SWU's being sold on Ebay and on the other here is a thread about them not being collected from 1K's. First, is it only 1K's this is happening too? I would hope so, but wouldn't bet on it. Second, don't you think there might be a link between non-collection and SWU sales on Ebay? To me it seems like this issue might be hurting you in upgrade availability as much as it's helping. Finally, if I were only a lowly PremEx or Premier I would be none too happy about this at all, it's hurting them even worse in upgrade availability with no benefit to them in additional upgrade opportunites.
