I just read it twice, and miss your point completely.

To be precise, the ONLY post that addressed the OP question of the GAs catching you if you slipped the bag past the TA was jimbo's at the start. But for the general question, crunchie's post seamed just as reasonable as the rest.

BTW, back to the OP subject. I wouldn't hide the carryon as that might look REAL odd. But stashing the heaviest items somewhere not in the main carryon will work. The gate will only flag you for size/quantity, they are not going to weigh you out of the blue.

And as to my experience. Twice weighed at the ticket window (LAX and SFO IIRC), but never since becomming gold. Never at the gate.
