Why don't you try your same-day change privileges for the connecting flight? I'm not sure if they examine the entire routing when doing same-day changes or look at each flight individually. 1P and 1K can make free changes to flights if the same booking class is available on another flight that day, any time. You sometimes have to watch out for flight-specific fares.
