I, too, would prefer that the SWU's be limited to use by a 1K member and any travelling companions on the same flights. Although I may no longer be able to gift them to a non-companion friend, the tradeoff (easier access to int'l upgrade seats) would be well worth the tradeoff. Two years ago, I NEVER had a problem finding upgrade seats. This year, every int'l flight has been standby. I'm also AA EXPLT and find it much easier to get seats in advance with them to Europe. Unless UA either adds more C and F seats, then I'm shifting some of my int'l travel to AA.
