Review of recent stay
This review probably won't add much to what's already been written before, but hopefully it will prove useful in some way to readers of this thread. We stayed in two rooms from Feb. 15-Feb. 18, 2008 using *points (I'm SPG PLAT). At check-in, I gave the guy behind the reception desk a "present." One of the rooms magically became a corner suite (which, contrary to others' experiences, did not smell like smoke). The other room was on the same floor and hallway, but I'm not sure if it was an upgrade (it was a nice size room, but I wouldn't call it a (junior) suite (although SPG might)).
As previously said, the gym in the hotel is very good--we used the Sheraton gym (accessible through a walkway) which is very well equipped (certainly for a hotel gym) and overlooks the pool. The gym in the Park Tower is smaller, and I never saw anyone there. The latter gym seemed a bit sterile.
Other than that, the hotel has a very nice location and it was always easy to get cabs. (We took many cabs, which are incredibly cheap.) We also received a very nice amenity upon check-in of a bottle of malbec and chocolates. The chocolates were very good. IMPORTANT NOTE: HIDE your chocolates when you leave for the day if you don't finish them. Housekeeping will remove them if you don't, and you will have lots of difficulty in getting a replacement set. My wife became so desperate, she made me travel into the lobby to scour it for equivalent chocolates from the reception desks. Upon returning to our room, I discovered that one of them had been bitten into and then replaced by someone unknown fiend back onto the reception desk. It's difficult to complain that someone previously bit into the chocolates you just stole (cosmic retribution?), but consider yourself forewarned.
All in all, a nice hotel, and a great city -- 90-95 degree weather every day!
fyi, I haven't seen the rooms at the Sheraton next-door. But, unless they're awful, I'd probably stay there next time if I was actually paying $$ rather than points, since the Park Tower seems to be about $100-$150 more per night. Also, one downside of using points here is that you don't get a free breakfast.
