If they were able to retract successfully, they would probably not proceed as normal. Once a landing gear problem manifests itself, the issue of concern is that the gear can get fully extended - and verifiably, reliably locked. (They'll probably still require a long runway and lots of emergency vehicles to cover, to begin with.)
