Honestly, for me it's not so much about saving a few bucks every 10 years. It's more about getting a picture I love, since I have to live with it for 10 years. At Walgreens, they pull down a white screen, disinterested employee snaps a picture of you--in the glare of the flourescent lights--with a cheap digital camera, then uploads it and prints it out. It's almost as if they're setting you up for failure! If you're not happy with the results, there goes $8. And you try again and again and again.
I got my first few sets of passport photos and visa photos at Walgreens, and this was my experence exactly. I would never pay $8 to try again, but am happy that I am now able to snap, crop, edit and print my own passport photos at home
