Of course, renting a car requires one be sober enough (or at least sober as required by the state of Nevada) to drive the vehicle back to the airport. IMO, a night (or a few hours) wandering around Vegas casinos would not be as much fun without a few [or, preferably many] adult beverages.
I have done what the OP is asking about many times. The lockers are easy to find (at least when coming in on US), I never paid more than $10-$15 for up to ten hrs. or so. It is easier than dragging the bags around, even if you do the bellman route, you have to take them in the cab with you, then worry about making it back to the original haotel, as was stated. In fact I am doing the same thing in April again, I enjoy the planned long layovers in LAS coming from PHL to SAN.
