Among major markets, CO has a schedule advantage only for NYC to secondary European markets. I feel that they are at a disadvantage in many/most other major markets to both Europe and Asia except IAH, where they have an edge, though not a huge one. From West Coast markets, I would have to think their market share to both Europe and Asia is pretty low. Where they do have an advantage would be from smaller US cities, but this is probably a wash with the Euro carriers' advantage from smaller Euro cities and the Asian carriers' advantage in Asia.

But, this is where a merger could help CO. They would have the planes to offer international service in both directions from (at least) EWR, LAX, SFO, IAH, IAD, and ORD. Indeed, if the extra widebodies could free up enough 752s out of EWR, CO would have a chance to add some TATL service from places like BOS, or maybe CLE. Or boost Latin American service from other cities. Coupled with the loyalty from domestic travel, CO could be in a position to really command a premium in a good number of US markets.

You and me both. Even at the much-villified LHR, I have easily made all my connections in an hour or less; 2 hours gives me ample time in the lounge or to hit the duty free. At AMS, I can usually get from gate to gate in 30 minutes or less (unless I have to trek out to the G gates). Having to collect and re-check bags can easily stretch to over an hour. I will almost always take a Euro connection over a US one, if possible.
