The way I usually explain it is that any moment in time, NW knows exactly how much money they've gotten for you, and what for, and can predict how much they'll get from you in the future and, if something is going wrong at that moment in time, what it's going to take to keep you happy.
I agree most airlines look at the money not the miles.
