Well, Vienna is pretty unique in that it didn't dismantle its tram network when they started to build the subway. The same cannot be said for Munich, where, as the subway was built, many tram lines were eliminated. That said, though, there a few nice routes in the Munich system, which you can all catch at the Karlsplatz/Stachus or the Karlsplatz Nord stops.

Line 27 north towards Petuelring takes you to the Pinakotheken museums and into Schwabing (student neighborhood).

Line 18 east toward Effnerplatz will take you past the technology museum (Deutsches Museum). Change to line 19 at Max Weber Platz, and ride that west towards Pasing for a nice ride past the Maximilianeum (Bavarian state parliament) and along the Maximilianstrasse back to the Karlsplatz area.

You can also get to the Nymphenburg castle on the tram (line 17), and he Bavaria film studios out in the suburb of Gruenwald (line 25).
