Providing your fare quote on aa.com was actually thru americanairlines.co.uk, and in GBP not USD, you could have taken screen shots of the aa fare quote, then booked on ba.com, and claimed the difference under BA's "Price Promise".

This would preserve the MFU option and the AMEX bonus.
