Given your extensive rail riding experience, it would be cool to read a similar "trip report" from a journey in the 50's or 60's by train.
My best memory from the early 60's was a ride from Denver to Chicago on the UP. I was going home on leave from the Air Force and what I remember most about the trip was having a steak dinner in the dome car dining area. It was dark out, but a clear sky with the stars shinning. The train gave hardly any movement as it must have been good railbed. It was relaxing and everything was good. Of all my train rides over the years that one remains most vivid in my memory.
