If you fly AA/UA long enough you will pick up enough pluses and minuses on both to make the comparison moot.

Neither have a monopoly in consistently good service. I suspect it will be very difficult to do in such large companies.

Just when I thought I had great service I bump into supidity and vice versa.

It is just a "tastes great, less filling" type of situation to compare the two. They are more alike than different compared to other airlines.
