Years ago, a partner at some big-name consulting firm (+ wife, + two small children) was taking my friend (+ wife) out to dinner at some really fancy steakhouse. Since this consulting firm was a fancy company and since the partner was kind of a fancy guy, it made sense that they were having dinner somewhere so nice.

While they were eating, one of the partner's children (about 5 years old) announces suddenly, "You know, Dad, this place is really nice. Almost as nice as the Olive Garden."

This was years ago and to this day, my friend and I now use the Olive Garden as a benchmark for rating dining experiences.
That's cute. And, well, you have to set the bench somewhere. How else do you know what's better or worse?
