In 2000 I went through a cursory check after I took the door marked for connecting flights and never had my passport stamped as coming in or going out of Munich, only stamped in BOS upon my return.
I read in a book that is how some people circumvent(ed) the passport tracking systems. They enter the terminal via the connecting flight door/passageway and then exit the terminal as a domestic arrival would. It only works at a mixed terminal. Most Intl terminals are one way in and one way out past Passport Control.
