Being mugged can happen no matter what. You have a camera out anywhere, it is a risk you take, so you that can't really be in the front of your mind. I have worked in some of the worst places around, including spending months at a time shooting a story on narcotics enforcement in one of the worst projects in Brooklyn, New York, at the height of the crack epidemic and never got mugged.
You and I are obviously professionals. But, when posters are asking about securing their Rebel and such, they're probably not war correspondents. All I'm saying is that getting your camera strap cut is one of many possibilities. You do this stuff all day long and I'm pretty sure you're aware of your surroundings at all times.
