Well 4WD still requires the car to be driven properly.
I grew up in Michigan and I can say that 4WD/AWD cars/trucks are a lot easier to drive with in the snow. It doesn't really help for turning or such but it helps for when you accelerate or stop.
4WD helps because it prevents the wheels from spinning. Therefore, it makes the cars/trucks easier to get out of a ditch, shoulder, etc. if they're stuck.
SUVs can still be dangerous since they have a higher center of gravity but if driven correctly, I think SUVs are safer than non-4WD cars.
