The problem with South America to Australia/Oceania isn't the distance. It's Antartica. It's too far to fly without a place to divert in case of emergency, and airline flights over Antartica are banned by international treaty.

Correction: There are flights from EZE-AKL so that takes care of the South America nonstop to Oceania connection.
