This is true.
Quite a while ago (pre-airpoints I think), Air NZ used the same Flight Number. So AKL-LHR required the one upgrade certificate. I got a return Economy to Business using 2 vouchers once. This was long before BP came along, and there was First - which I managed to get on an upgrade AKL-LAX. Very nice.
Nowdays, my vouchers usually expire.
