If I book this as a rt from LAX to STL to LAX the fare is still way higher on AA. For some reason studentuniverse.com can get that XNA routing at a much lower cost.

It doesn't apply to studentuniverse.com. StudentUniverse negotiates low costs with the carriers, so the carriers will tell you just to book through that site if it is cheaper.
