in that case either the miles or the voucher sounds good. Either one would work. If it were me Id personally use the voucher and bank the miles. The voucher expires and the miles dont as long as you have account activity. If you redeem miles you wont earn miles for the flight. If you use the companion fare you will earn miles for the flight! I always burn up my companion fare voucher and other certificates before I burn miles. Of course I run the risk of losing them all if someday AS decides to stop the program or sells out and the buyer doesnt want to honor my miles but thats the risk I take. The best time to get SIT sales is probably winter time when nobody in their right state of mind wants to go there LOL!
