NZ already has rights for Australia-US flights, which they flew up until several years ago. However, NZ UA & QF have a cosy deal* to limit competition on both Australia-US and NZ-US.

* before anyone makes a comment about cartels, I doubt very much there is anything in writing - more an unspoken understanding not to compete too much on each others' turf
