here, the design for the 787 is 8000-8500nm.
This
map has the shaded areas set at those two distances from SYD. MSP is within the 8000nm range and DTW and ATL are within the second range, JFK is out of both.
Too bad NW ordered the shorter-range 787-8s instead of the longer-range 787-9s; CO has converted most of its -8 orders to -9s. Perhaps NW/DL might do the same?
