Most of South Island is accessible
I drove a motor home around the South Island a few years ago. Out route was we crossed over from Wellington on the Interislander ferry.
Took Queen Charlotte drive out of Picton around the Marlborough Sounds to Nelson. Stopping in Havlock for delicious mussles. They grow best there.
Nelson to Greymouth via Westport.
South to Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers, via Lake Matheson, overnighted in Haast.
Thru the Haast Pass (easy drive) to Wanaka.
Then to Queenstown.
The to Lake Manapouri ( near te Anau)
Drove to Milford - just take the road gently - tourist buses go in there every day.
Day trip to Doubtful Sound - possibly the hightlight of the trip.
South to Invercargill - then to Dunedin.
Dunedin to Omarama via Oamaru and the Waitaki valley.
Omarama to Lake Tekapo via Mt Cook.
Finally to Christchurch.
Its a great way to travel.
Any questions feel free to IM me.
