You have a paper ticket and lose the coupon in the back on the way to the gate. In most circumstances you will have to pay a lost ticket fee of $100 minimum and have the whole ticket reissued at the issuing airline's office which could be in a different city. However, in the OPs experience the agent was simply able to print it straight away.

Of course, the agent could see that this was an electronic ticket and that I was not trying to lie to save money for a coupon that I had lost. I'm quite certain that such a transparent lie would be easily caught.
