As East Coast parents of a 19 (soon to be 20) month old who has logged many flights (over 28 distinct segs.), we would recommend staying within your time zone give or take maybe 3 hours at the max... (for the first couple trips)... especially if baby is established in their sleeping pattern.

This gives them (and you) time to get acclimated as it's pretty hard on them when the sun's coming up when they should be sleeping.

Florida, The Caribbean, Bermuda, parts of Central America are all great candidates for a first trip IMHO. The shorter flying time is also a plus.
