It's called Rule 120.20, what basically happens is that you write on the ticket "RULE 120.20 INVOL REROUTE", your identifying information, etc. However, the other airline will not accept the ticket unless we've called over and confirmed them seats on the flight.

In doing a Rule 120.20 we give any value the ticket may have to the other airline, they take it at face value.

E-tickets are starting to work more because airlines are making e-ticket agreements. United currently has agreements with Northwest, Air Canada, Continental, and American as far as I know. Pretty much the other airline can take control of it by looking up the e-ticket in their systems and attaching it to one of their flights.
