Yes, they expire when your *G year is up. Your printed airpoints statement should say this down the bottom, along with the number of A$ required to retain status.

Note they also expire if you attain *E status, which is really annoying.

Look for flights that have discount business availability, or just hope. I have had moderate success on AKL-LAX with mine over the years. Kiwi Flyer has more experience (with way more travel!) and has had challenges getting upgrades to clear. Many of mine have only cleared at the gate.
