Sure, you can split up the PNRs, but that doesn't mean the check-in ticket agent or the gate agent or the FAs are oblivious to the situation. If it's caught at the airport or during boarding, and the parents have to be re-seated, imagine the crappy selection of seats remaining at that point. Like nothing but middles. Me? I'd just suck it up and choose non-exit row seats for the parents - any row of three will do. Or you can try to be clever.
