I've certainly done the same with AA, but I'm a mere Platinum on AA and Silver on BA. BA doesn't see fit to provide anything other than the ultra long hold time 1-800-AIRWAYS for oiks like me so that's basically a non-starter.

It is a first come first serve which is annoying especially for pax who have paid a premium price. I disagree that the problem is a lack of seperation for "status" and "no-hoper" passengers - IMO it's totally unacceptable for anyone to have to wait over 2 hours to get re-booked regardless of who they are. That's down to a lack of competent staff which is a result of BA making most of it's remote locations "one man and a dog" facilities. If they aren't going to have staff, they have to have lots of machines each with a phone that connects directly to the UK or Bangalore or somewhere that they have a 24/7 operation.
