I have no doubt that this is done and that the first-come-first-served queue is for the rest of the pax.
I turned up at ORD once to find that my plane had been cancelled and that I had been reaccommodated on a plane that was leaving in 10 minutes. Whisked through security and straight onto the plane. It was bedlam in the airport, with plenty of suits stamping their feet.
The absolute miracle was that the luggage made it too.
