Hmmm...that's misspeak. Some AA benefits are restricted to the US, but others extend to other neighboring countries. For example, segment upgrades apply to U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, The Bahamas, Bermuda and between the U.S. and Central America -- but this doesn't make any of those countries "domestic".
