I "bought" 80000 BA miles about 2 yrs ago from a bloke via an auction site for circa 500 quid or so, cant remember exactly.
I also had to pay the return taxes from GLA-DXB which were another £200 or thereabouts.
For me, it did work and I obtained a cheap CLUB WORLD ticket for my mother to Dubai. The bloke was obviously not part of a household account and so was free to book the ticket for whoever he wanted to.
