However, DL doesn't fly to Kauai so you end up having to buy an interisland round trip if your destination is Kauai.

Also, isn't the US-HI award on DL 5k cheaper than the UA award or the DL award via M+? I was able to use the Skymiles/Amex deal last year for several friends and family tickets, but in all cases, somebody had to pay for interisland tickets and many of the DL flights arrive too late to make an interisland connection. I think there's one from LA that arrives mid-afternoon, in time for connecting to an interisland flight. (At least there used to be one that left LA sometime around 2PM), but with many of the award routings that were available from the East Coast we had to burn nights in Honolulu also.
