A lot of people (read: other Americans) don't realize that in a number of Latin American countries you negotiate the rate for your cab ride and pay before you get in the cab. I have heard of (though never fallen victim to it myself) people who end up paying extremely inflated prices because they forgot to negotiate the fare first.
