I started this thread, I thought I'd better update you as to what is happening to my precious bag!
I'm now in Seattle -and have another onward flight to Albuquerque later today. So far, the bag has been carried on at Shannon (off again at Dublin - to go through USA immigration, and then back on again - and it's been carried on at ORD to SEA.
The bag has not been opened at any security checks so far, apart from the additional hand inspection at the gate at Shannon. The inspector went "wow - I can see why you lock this bag", when I opened it, and felt around but took nothing out of the bag and didn't even look inside the cloth bags that my lenses are in. By the way, if anyone knows what that extra hand inspection is about at SNN, I'd be interested to hear!
There have been some very big bags carried on at SNN and DUB. The EI staff didn't even ask to weigh it and no one has queried it at all. The EI staff so far have been extremely courteous and helpful (as have the AA staff - I'm meeting the Southwest team today!)
So, all-in-all so far, not problems at all, and I'm wondering what I was worried about in the first place!
