BTW, can anyone recommend the fastest route from LAX-BOS with a connection from AKL? and the same in reverse?</font>
Not sure I understand the question, but let me take a stab.

There are two flights AKL-LAX that operate under a UA code:

UA 842 depart AKL 7:45pm arrive LAX 11:35am
UA 4352 depart AKL 8:45pm arrive LAX 12:45pm

The first (842) is UA metal. The second (4352) is NZ metal.

Only 842 will connect in time to catch a non-stop to BOS...
UA 168 depart LAX 1:00pm arrive BOS 9:13pm

On UA 4352, your only option back to BOS is to connect to Denver (UA 1154 and then UA 726), arriving at BOS at 11:55pm.

So, with BOS as your final destination, I'd take the 7:45pm departure out of AKL.

In the reverse direction:

Unquestionably, your best bet is to catch UA 169 BOS-LAX (5:45pm departure, 9:04pm arrival) and connect to UA 841 LAX-AKL (10:20pm departure, 6:55 am +2 days arrival).

The LAX-AKL flight on NZ metal leaves LA at 8:30pm... which means you'll have to connect through ORD or DEN from BOS in order to make the flight (or spend 6 hrs at LAX).
