Some unusual varietals that come to mind for me at least are Savignan which is used in Vin Jaune and Furmint which is used as one of the grapes in Tokaji but can be seen on its own. I have seen Verdelho as a varietal from Australia when before it had only been seen as one of the typical varieties of Madiera. I might as well throw in the rest of the high quality Madiera grapes varieties, Sercial (which is not related to Riesling), Bual, .......o, Terrantez and Malvasia (a.k.a. Malmsey). From Sicily, there is Nero d'Avola. One varietal which has increased a lot since the 1980s is Viognier which one now sees in California. The champagne house of Duval-Leroy has produced an all Petit Meslier champagne. Petit Meslier, along with Arbanne and Pinot Blanc Vrai are the forgotten permitted varieties in champagne.
