I prefer to use my BA Amex for mileage etc.
I have just confirmed with Amex - the insurance is automatic with being a cardmember, and does not require you to pay for any part of a trip with the Platinum card, or indeed with any amex card. So you can use your BA Amex (or bmi mastercard or whatever) with impunity and still be covered.
