Eg. AKL-SYD data taken from QF website tonight
fuel surcharge = A$70.00
fly carbon neutral charge = A$2.19

Surely if I can offset my use of fossil fuels for $2.19 then the fuel surcharge should be less than this amount considering the fly carbon neutral charge takes other factors into account such as energy use in buildings and vehicles on the ground as well as actually flying between AKL and SYD.
The carbon offsetting is about planting trees. The fuel surcharge is about the price of fuel. Obviously there is some relation in that as the length of the trip increases the amount of fuel that needs to be offset does ie more trees planted. The cost of the fuel (the size of the surcharge) has no bearing. Although if this carbon offset thing catches on I guess we could see trees and crude oil becoming complimentary goods
