Thanks for the information,
KVS. I am totally aware of it - and as you will see from my first post, I telephoned Aer Lingus baggage staff to make it clear that I had a heavy and fragile bag, and that I wanted to notify them of that fact, in advance.
It is IE staff who do not appear to be aware of their own rules. The baggage personnel simply refused to entertain any of my attempts to pay for or otherwise protect my possessions, and told me that they would have to be checked in, if overweight - rather than any attempt, by them, to help me protect my valuable and fragile possessions.
In my previous posts, I have been commenting on the fact that I get different and contradictory responses from IE staff. I do know the answers, I was simply pointing out that as a paying customer (and the cost of this trip is now running into mid four figures), I would expect
them to have the correct answers too, and to not rely on conjecture.
